Story
Alex Gambal arrived to France in 1993 from the United States. Shortly after, he founded “Maison Alex Gambal” in 1997. It took a mere 20 years for the Domaine to build its astounding reputation in Burgundy, making it one of the region’s finest family-made wines.
The winegrowing area of Vougeot, in the middle of the Côte de Nuits, is known for its prestigous Clos Vougeot. This Clos alone covers a large part of the village of Vougeot, between Chambolle-Musigny and Flagey-Echezeaux. With its 50 hectares entirely surrounded by walls, this vineyard is indisputably the largest of Burgundy’s Grand Crus and the wines produced reveal many different expressions dependant on exact sourcing location.
Vineyard
This Clos Vougeot is made with grapes from a plot located in the higher part of the Clos, at the foot of Château du Clos de Vougeot. The vines are between 35-40 years old, certified organic and planted on clay-limestone soils on an east facing slope.
Vinification
Grapes are hand picked, sorted and include 50% wholecluster grapes. Winemaking begins in wooden vats, with natural alcoholic fermentations and regular punchdowns and pump-overs. After 20 days, fruit is pressed and wine is moved via gravity flow into French Oak barrels, 50% new. Maturation lasts 19 months, including malo-lactic fermentation.
Tasting Notes
This wine presents itself with a ruby color and purple tints. The nose shows aromas of red fruit, spices and a touch of woodiness. The palate reveals great structure witha delicate and long finish.
Food Pairing
This wine would pair harmoniously with roast pork with herbs and fennel, mushroom risotto or grilled lobster.
