Story
Alex Gambal arrived to France in 1993 from the United States. Shortly after, he founded “Maison Alex Gambal” in 1997. It took a mere 20 years for the Domaine to build its astounding reputation in Burgundy, making it one of the region’s finest family-made wines.
Home to 9 of the 24 Grands Crus of the Côte-de-Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin opens flamboyantly the gateway to Burgundy’s Grande Côte. This winegrowing area produces powerful, full-bodied red wines, marked by intense, complex and extremely elegant aromas. These laying-down wines fully express the fine quality of their terroir after a long period of aging.
Vineyard
The Grands Crus Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin synonymous, but it is the appellation Charmes-Chambertin that is usually employed. These grapes come from a plot located in the highest part of the climat named “Mazoyères-Chambertin”. The vines are 35-40 years old, certified organic and are east facing. The soil is a mixture of brown and white clay-limestone composites.
Vinification
The fruit is hand picked, sorted with 50% wholecuster inclusion. The vinification begins in wooden vats, with natural fermentation occuring while light punchdowns and pumpovers regulate the cap. After 15 days, the grapes are pressed and the wine is transferred via gravity flow into French Oak Barrels (50% new). The wine matures in barrel for 19 monts, including malo-lactic.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby hue with purple tinges, a nose of violet, red fruit and hints of roasting. The palate is fine, but reveals great complexity. A long, fresh finish.
Food Pairing
This wine would sit well with grilled sardines, chicken rotisserie, or braised gamey meats.
