New Zealand Region
New Zealand’s vineyards have the distinction of being the southernmost in the world, as well as being the first vineyards to see the sun each day, thanks to their location near the International Date Line.
The renowned Marlborough winegrowing region is located at the northeastern corner of New Zealand’s South Island. The first Marlborough vines were planted in 1973 and soon aroused the interest of winemakers…and drinkers…around the world. The alluvial terrain of the Wairau and the Awatere riverbeds, combined with patches of low-vigor clay soils from the nearby Wither Hills, offers ideal conditions for viticulture.
Marlborough is considered the sunniest province in New Zealand, providing the vines a long maturation period and giving rise to the brightness of fruit character for which the region is now famous.
