Bordeaux Region

With 57 appellations, more than 9,000 wine-producing chateaux, and 13,000 winegrowers, Bordeaux produces more wine than all of Australia. This vast winemaking region is justly famous for its prestigious “Grand Cru,” but also produces a wide range of other excellent wines at reasonable prices.

Water defines the geography of Bordeaux. Three important rivers wind their way through the region: the mighty Gironde and the two rivers that feed it, the Dordogne and the Garonne. Smaller streams crisscross the landscape, while to the west stretches the Atlantic Ocean. All this water plays a critical role in shaping the region’s environment, and ultimately the wines it produces.

Bordeaux is renowned as a red wine region, and indeed more than 80% of the wine produced here is red. The two most important grapes cultivated in Bordeaux are Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

With so many Bordeaux wines to choose from, it’s essential to choose wisely when making your selections. To simplify matters, Planet Wine has established close relationships with leading Bordeaux chateaux. For example, thanks to a long-standing partnership with Ducourt Vineyards, one of the most important estates in Bordeaux, we can bring you the finest vintages from that sought-after label at great prices!
